Edwin Sifuna Fired as ODM Secretary-General

Share

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary General.

The decision follows clashes between Sifuna and several party leaders, including party leader Dr. Oburu Odinga, who accused him of disloyalty and defying party directives.

Dr Oburu, who chaired a meeting on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) session in Mombasa, warned party officials against publicly contradicting official ODM resolutions, particularly regarding opposition to the party’s “broad-based” cooperation with the government.

According to the NEC resolution, Sifuna’s removal was the outcome of deliberations on his conduct and was executed in line with the party constitution and applicable laws.

“The NEC expressed grave concern over the rising levels of indiscipline within the party, particularly at the senior leadership level,” the resolution stated.

He stressed that while everyone has a voice, in a democracy, “the majority will always have their way.”

The Nairobi Senator has been replaced by Catherine Omanyo in an acting capacity, who is also the Busia Women Representative and the party’s Deputy Secretary-General.

Sifuna’s removal as ODM Secretary General was seen by some as inevitable due to his strong criticism of the cooperation between President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the ODM party.

The Nairobi Senator has also been vocal about the 2027 pre-election pact that ODM is set to enter with President Ruto, a move he strongly opposed. He has also accused the Ruto government of failing to implement the 10-point agenda, one of the reasons ODM and UDA signed a cooperation agreement on March 7, 2025.

Leaders Opposed to Broad-Based Cooperation

Another ODM official recently removed from his party position is Saboti MP Caleb Amisi. On February 11, 2026, Amisi was relieved of his senior post in the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC), though he remains the Member of Parliament for Saboti.

Amisi has been a vocal critic of ODM’s relationship with UDA. He contested the legality of his removal, claiming he was informed via WhatsApp and a letter from the Executive Director rather than through formal party channels.

He argued that, according to the ODM constitution, the NEC must meet, vote, and grant a member the right to reply before removal, none of which occurred in his case. He also noted that he received the dismissal letter before the NEC had formally met in Mombasa to deliberate.

Besides Sifuna and Amisi, other ODM members who have opposed the ODM-UDA cooperation include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, ODM Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka.

Following his removal as party Secretary General, it remains to be seen which political direction Sifuna will take.
