The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended a matatu driver after a dramatic confrontation at Allsops, where a pedestrian blocked the vehicle from driving along a designated walkway.
The incident, which was captured and went viral, occurred when a matatu allegedly strayed from the main carriageway and encroached on a pedestrian path.
In a video seen by hivileo.co.ke, the man stood his ground and did not give way, leading to a standoff between the driver and other members of the public.
According to accounts from the scene, the drama started when a matatu driver invaded a pedestrian walkway, with bystanders describing the pedestrian as brave for confronting the motorist.
The confrontation has since sparked debate over road discipline and the safety of non-motorised road users.
In a statement issued following the incident, NTSA confirmed it had summoned the driver linked to Neema Travellers Agency Ltd Sacco for disciplinary action.
“We wish to inform the public that the driver belonging to Neema Travellers Agency Ltd (Sacco) was presented before the Authority earlier today,” NTSA said.
The Authority disclosed that the driver was subjected to mandatory evaluation procedures but did not pass the assessment threshold required for continued operation on public roads.
“The driver underwent the required test and did not meet the set standards,” NTSA stated, adding that, “as a result, his driving license has been suspended for a period of ninety (90) days.”

The regulator further directed that the driver must satisfy additional compliance conditions before seeking reinstatement.
“Additionally, he will be required to undergo a medical assessment before undertaking a subsequent retest,” the statement read.
Back in focus are rogue public service vehicle operators who misuse facilities meant for pedestrians as they navigate busy routes, endangering many lives.
Road safety champions argue that pedestrian walkways are protected areas of law that aim to safeguard foot traffic from traffic-related harm.
Trespassing on such areas results in a violation of road traffic laws, thereby subjecting motorists and saccos to punitive measures as prescribed in such laws.

NTSA used the occasion to reiterate its enforcement mandate and appealed for collective responsibility among motorists.
“We urge all drivers to exercise responsibility while on the road, observe traffic regulations, and always give way to pedestrians,” the Authority said.
At the same time, the regulator acknowledged the role of citizens in flagging dangerous conduct, noting that public vigilance remains critical in promoting accountability within the transport sector.
“We commend the public for reporting incidents of reckless driving and for partnering with us in promoting road safety,” NTSA added.
