Kanja Orders Probe After Security Breach at Ruto’s Wajir County NYOTA Event

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered an immediate probe into a security breach that occurred during a National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) funds event in Wajir County attended by President William Ruto.

Ruto briefly paused his speech in Wajir County after an unidentified man breached security and ran toward the podium while he was addressing the crowd.

In a statement, IG Kanja said the National Police Service (NPS) acknowledges the security incident.

Kanja affirmed that the safety of the President, dignitaries, and members of the public was never at risk at any point during the incident.

He added that the Presidential Security Team and officers on site responded swiftly and professionally to calm the situation and restore normalcy.

“The NPS wishes to state unequivocally that at no time was the safety of His Excellency the President, other dignitaries, or members of the public compromised. The Presidential Security Team and other officers on the ground acted with the utmost professionalism and speed to de-escalate the situation and restore order,” reads part of the statement.

Kanja Orders Investigations

Kanja said the individual was quickly detained, and the event continued without disruption.

He added that a dedicated team has been tasked to investigate the incident within three days, identify any security gaps, and implement immediate corrective measures.

“The individual involved was swiftly apprehended, and the event proceeded without further interruption. The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has formed a team to conduct an inquiry into the matter within three days, to identify any procedural gaps that may have contributed to this breach, and to take immediate remedial measures,” Kanja said.

Kanja reassured the public that NPS remains steadfast in its commitment to serve and protect.
