Who Owns Popular Garden City Mall

Share

Popular Garden City Mall is a major landmark on Nairobi’s skyline. It is a shopping centre located in Kasarani in Nairobi, Kenya.

It is the second largest shopping centre in Kenya with 33,500 m² of gross retail space.

Garden City Mall, located 15km from Nairobi’s city center via Thika Road, redefined the region’s retail landscape when it launched in May 2015.

It was opened to the public on 28 May 2015, making it the largest mall in East and Central Africa until 2017 when Two Rivers Mall was inaugurated

Beyond its residential offerings, the mall serves as a one-stop hub for fashion, banking, and electronics. Visitors can enjoy a curated mix of global fast-food chains, fine dining, a world-class movie theater, and expansive green spaces for outdoor recreation.

Key Shops at Garden City Mall

Garden City Mall is anchored by Carrefour Market. The other shops available at Garden City include: TACC Store, Safaricom, Samsung, Authorized Apple reseller: Salute iWorld, Artcaffe, Mambo Italia, KFC, Java, and Big Square.

At Garden City, shops and eateries are thoughtfully arranged around light, airy terraces that overlook our lush Central Park.

Designed with the whole family in mind, the grounds feature a dedicated children’s playground, an interactive water fountain play-park, and striking public art installations by renowned Kenyan artists.

For events and community gatherings, the park also hosts a signature amphitheater. Strategically located between Exits 7 and 8 on the Thika Superhighway, the mall is a convenient 15-minute drive from Nairobi’s CBD, Westlands, and Runda.

Sustainability is at the heart of our design; the mall’s rooftop features one of Africa’s largest solar-paneled carports, providing shaded parking while powering our operations.

The architecture maximizes natural light and fresh-air ventilation through a modern glass aesthetic, complemented by one of the city’s most generous parking ratios at approximately four spaces per 100 square meters of retail area.

Who Owns Garden City

The mall is owned and developed by Actis, a leading investor in sustainable infrastructure projects in emerging markets.

In 2023, Nairobi’s flagship retail, residential, and commercial property development broke ground for the emerging markets investor responsible for the Junction Mall and Nairobi Business Park.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Michael Turner, Managing Director, Actis East Africa, said: “We are delighted to set out on this journey with the citizens of Nairobi, building on the success of The Junction and Nairobi Business Park. Garden City will change the face of Thika Road and become a major hub for the Northern Nairobi catchment area, which currently has no modern retail, office, or leisure facilities. The development will provide residents, professionals, visitors, and shoppers with an unrivalled blend of leisure, shopping, and residential facilities, all set within a beautiful landscaped environment.”

Future Plans for Actis

Actis intends to develop an extra 15 acres next to Garden City into a new business park.

The park has good transportation connections and is located 9 km from the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

With industry-leading parking ratios, it expands the total area of contemporary executive offices to 60,000 square meters.

In addition, the company plans to construct a hospital and a four-star, 150-key business hotel. A pedestrian boulevard will connect the Business Park to the park and shopping center.

The Garden City site will total 47 acres when finished.
