The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Moscow has issued a stern warning to Kenyan citizens planning to travel to the Russian Federation, Belarus, and Kazakhstan for employment.
The advisory comes amid rising reports of Kenyans falling victim to unverified and informal recruitment channels.
According to the embassy, many Kenyans have been lured by promises of high-paying jobs, residency arrangements, and favorable employment conditions, only to encounter difficulties upon arrival.
“Many of the affected individuals or their relatives have written to the Embassy directly or through the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs reporting that they were promised employment opportunities, high salaries, and residency arrangements which, upon arrival, did not exist or differed significantly from what had been communicated,” the embassy said in a statement.
The embassy further warned that in some cases, passports were withheld, movement was restricted, and individuals became subject to conditions beyond their control, limiting access to consular services.
“The Embassy wishes to inform the public that where individuals have travelled through irregular, unsafe, unverified, and informal channels, consular access and intervention may be limited or delayed,” the notice continued.

“Immediate extraction or repatriation may also be challenging for contractual disputes, restricted location, or legal processes under the laws and administrative procedures of the host country.”
Authorities emphasized the importance of verifying all job offers through official channels.
“Verify all job offers through the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, and the Kenyan diplomatic mission before departure,” the embassy advised.
The embassy also cautioned citizens against traveling on tourist visas for employment purposes and urged them to inform family members that unverified travel carries significant personal risk and may limit government assistance.

“ALL Kenyans travelling or residing in the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus, or Kazakhstan should register with the Embassy,” the statement read.
Kenyan citizens were also explicitly warned against accepting employment arranged through social media, messaging applications, or unlicensed agencies.
“DO NOT travel for employment arranged through social media, messaging applications, or unlicensed agencies,” the advisory underscored.
The embassy reaffirmed that while the Government of Kenya continues to collaborate with host countries to assist affected citizens wherever access and local regulations permit, prevention remains the most effective protection.
“The safety and welfare of Kenyan citizens abroad remains a priority of the Government of Kenya,” the embassy concluded.
