The National Police Service (NPS) has issued an update amid rising political tensions following threats from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against Inspector General Douglas Kanja over investigations into an alleged church attack.

In a press statement released on Sunday, February 15 from the National Police Service Headquarters, the Office of the Inspector General said it was providing an update on ongoing investigations and security matters across the country.

“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to update the public on the progress of investigations relating to recent security incidents, including events reported at Witima Church last month and other public gatherings in different parts of the country,” the statement read.

Gachagua, speaking on Sunday the 15th, demanded swift action and questioned the pace of investigations.

“We want to know who attacked the church and why they have not been prosecuted. So tomorrow, we will go to the office to know why those who harmed women and children have not been arraigned,” he said.

Update on Witima Church and Other Incidents

Responding to the concerns, the NPS stated that, “upon receiving reports of alleged criminal activity, it promptly initiated investigations in accordance with the law.”

The Service confirmed that officers have, “recorded statements, reviewed available footage, and analysed intelligence to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and to identify any individuals responsible.”

The police emphasized that investigative timelines depend heavily on public participation.

“As with all criminal investigations, the success and speed of the process depend significantly on formal reporting, detailed witness accounts, and the cooperation of complainants and members of the public,” the statement read.

While acknowledging that preliminary inquiries were launched based on information circulating publicly, the Service clarified that full-scale investigations require structured evidence gathering.

“Comprehensive investigations require affected persons and witnesses to record official statements to enable evidence-based conclusions and possible prosecutions,” the NPS said.

Appeal for Public Cooperation

The Service urged individuals with relevant information to assist investigators.

“The NPS continues to appeal to anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist investigating officers. This cooperation is essential to ensure that justice is not only pursued but demonstrably upheld,” the statement added.
