Kenya Met Lists Areas to Receive Rainfall This Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released its weekly weather forecast for the period February 17 to 23, 2026, outlining areas expected to receive rainfall and those likely to experience hot daytime temperatures and cool nights.

According to Kenya Met, rainfall is expected over several parts of the country, particularly in Western Kenya, the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of the South-eastern Lowlands.

However, North-eastern and North-western Kenya are projected to remain generally sunny and dry.

Highlands West of the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin

Regions in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin are expected to experience rainfall during the forecast period.

Morning showers are likely in a few areas, with afternoons expected to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms. Nights will remain partly cloudy, with occasional rainfall in some places.

Counties in this region include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Kericho, Bomet, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, and parts of Baringo and Nakuru.

Minimum night-time temperatures in some areas of Western Kenya and the Central Rift Valley are expected to drop below 10°C.

Nairobi and the Central Highlands (East of the Rift Valley)

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and surrounding counties, mornings are expected to be mostly sunny.

However, afternoon showers are likely in a few places throughout the week, while nights will remain partly cloudy with occasional showers in isolated areas.

Counties in this region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Some parts of the Central Highlands are expected to record cool night-time temperatures below 10°C.

South-eastern Lowlands

The South-eastern Lowlands, covering Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and the inland parts of Tana River County, will experience mostly sunny mornings.

Afternoon and evening showers are likely in a few areas during the week. Daytime temperatures in these regions are expected to rise above 30°C in several places.

Coastal Region

The Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu are expected to experience generally sunny conditions.

However, daytime temperatures are likely to remain high, exceeding 30°C in many areas. Nights will be partly cloudy throughout the forecast period.

North-western and North-eastern Kenya

The North-western counties of Turkana and Samburu, as well as the North-eastern region covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are expected to remain largely sunny and dry.

These areas will record high daytime temperatures, with some places likely to exceed 36°C, particularly in parts of Turkana, Mandera, and Garissa.

Nights will remain partly cloudy, with generally warm conditions.

KMD has advised members of the public to stay updated through its official communication platforms and to take necessary precautions, especially in areas expected to receive heavy rainfall or experience extreme heat.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared throughout the week.
