Martha Karua Hints on Joining Sifuna

Martha Karua, one of the leaders of the opposition, has indicated that she might work with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whom she referred to as a principled leader, while restating her commitment to governance reforms and a possible one-term presidency.

Speaking to Jeff Koinange on the increasing political realignments in the run-up to the 2027 General Election, Karua commended Sifuna’s leadership approach and ideological orientation.

“Sifuna is a principled politician, I would collaborate not just with him but with all people with whom we share ideas,” she said, indicating her willingness to work with a wider opposition.

Karua made the comments at a time when opposition leaders are considering forming strategic alliances to take on President William Ruto in the next political cycle.

Karua also took the opportunity to state her presidential ambitions, indicating that if elected, she would serve only one term.

Vows One-Term Presidency

“If Kenyans give me a chance to serve at the highest level, I would only do a 5-year term so that Ruto must know when we in the opposition are telling him one term, one term is not a curse, you got 5 years, rejoice, show your best in the 5 years,” Karua stated.

She added, “I am not yet there, give me the chance, I will be one term, but in that one term, I will lay the foundation, returning the country firmly on the rule of law path, fighting corruption, strengthening our institutions of governance, and leading the way in serving Kenyans, not going there for self-aggrandizement.”

Karua framed her proposed single-term presidency as a reform agenda centered on institutional restoration and accountability.

Track Record and Rule of Law

Addressing concerns about political consistency once in power, Karua pointed to her public record.

“I think the way to know is to look at somebody’s past. Ever since my adulthood, through the public spaces I have worked in, I have been a stickler for the rule of law, respect for human rights, and democracy,” she said.

“My fight against corruption has been constant; it is one of the things we differed on. That is how people like Ruto would be appointed to the Cabinet when they had pending cases,” she added.

Karua further recalled her activism during the era of former President Daniel arap Moi, stating: “Throughout the Moi era, when people were not speaking out, we were speaking out, risking and eventually taken to court to be enjoined against talking politics.”

2027 Outlook and IEBC Challenge

Looking ahead to the 2027 race, Karua warned of heightened political tensions.

“2027 is going to be all campaign, but judging from what we are seeing today. It does not look good; it looks like Ruto is determined to burn down the country,” she claimed.

“He said during Gen Z, if there is no Kenya for him, there will not be a Kenya for anybody else. That is a dangerous way of reasoning,” she added.

On electoral oversight, Karua addressed the newly constituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“Even though we did not agree with the process through which they were appointed, now that they are there and they are the IEBC that we have, we must give them a chance to prove themselves,” she said.

She cautioned against institutional compromise, noting, “IEBC officers subordinated themselves to the police and to high-ranking government officials. Ethekon and his team, the ball is in their court, let them win the trust of Kenyans.”
