Jambojet Issues Notice to Passengers Amid Aviation Workers’ Strike

Share

Travelers flying in or out of Kenya have faced major disruptions over the past two days as industrial action by aviation workers led to significant delays and cancellations across the country’s air transport network.

The unrest stems from a labour dispute between the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) over stalled negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and other long-standing grievances, including demands for better pay, improved working conditions, and resolution of contract terms dating back several years.

Jambojet initially informed passengers of disruptions on  February 16 2026, as air traffic control delays caused extended ground holding times across the airline’s network.

In a statement, the airline said:

“All flights across our network are delayed, with the possibility of extended ground holding times, due to delayed clearances. Our teams are actively monitoring the situation and working closely with the relevant stakeholders on any developments to minimize disruption to our schedule.”

“All affected guests will continue receiving regular flight status updates directly, with the safety and comfort of our passengers and crew remaining our highest priority.”

Escalation on  February 17

On  February 17 2026, Jambojet issued an updated advisory, warning that disruptions would continue as the airline worked to resolve the backlog from the previous day:

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and uncertainty this may cause to your travel plans. Kindly do not proceed to the airport for your scheduled flight until you receive a further update from us regarding your flight status.”

“We will continue to provide timely communication via SMS, email, and our official social media platforms as soon as more information becomes available.”

Authorities Respond and Contingency Measures

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority activated contingency measures to maintain critical aviation safety and navigation services, assuring the public that aviation safety oversight remains uncompromised.

Airlines such as Kenya Airways advised passengers to reconfirm flight information and consider rebooking through official channels.

Passengers’ Plight and Wider Impacts

Travelers stranded at airports reported confusion, long queues, and anxiety as flights were pushed back or canceled with limited notice.

Prolonged disruptions at Kenya’s main aviation hub could affect regional connectivity, tourism, and trade, with ripple effects felt by both businesses and travelers.

As negotiations continue between KAWU and authorities, airlines have pledged regular updates and committed to restoring normal operations as swiftly as possible.
