KLB Clarifies Withdrawal of Curriculum Textbooks by KICD

Share

The Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) has dismissed claims that its curriculum textbooks have been withdrawn by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

In a notice dated Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the state-owned publisher clarified that none of its curriculum books currently in circulation has been deregistered or withdrawn, assuring schools and other stakeholders that all its approved textbooks remain valid for use.

“KLB wishes to inform all our customers, partners and stakeholders that none of our curriculum books have been withdrawn by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD),” the notice stated.

The Bureau further stressed that all its textbooks available in the market are duly approved by KICD and meet the required standards for use in Kenyan schools.

“All our books currently in circulation are duly approved by KICD and remain valid for use in Kenyan schools,” KLB said.

The clarification comes amid growing concerns among schools, parents and education stakeholders over the approval status of certain learning materials following ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Currently, KICD has partnered with various publishers to develop and print curriculum materials aligned with the CBC framework, which emphasises the mastery of skills and knowledge rather than traditional time-based learning.

Under the CBC structure, basic education is organised into three levels: Early Years Education, Middle School Education and Senior School, before learners transition to higher education in universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, or teacher training colleges.

KLB, established in 1947, is a state corporation operating under the Ministry of Education and remains one of Kenya’s leading publishers of educational materials. The Bureau produces textbooks for early learning, primary, secondary and tertiary levels, as well as other publications including dictionaries, storybooks and digital learning materials.

KLB is a Publisher of curriculum and non-textbook reading materials such as children story books, autobiographies, dictionaries, revision books, vernacular books and e-books.
