President William Ruto has directed the Cabinet Secretary for Interior to develop a framework within 60 days for a dedicated Nairobi Metropolitan Police unit aimed at enhancing security in the capital.
The new unit will work hand in hand with Nairobi County security teams to address rising crime and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
“I direct the Cabinet Secretary for Interior to prepare and present, within 60 days, a framework for a dedicated Nairobi Metropolitan Police unit to work hand in hand with Nairobi County security. We must make Nairobi safe.”
“We must make Nairobi safe,” Ruto said, explaining the government’s commitment to tackling insecurity in the city.
The announcement comes amid concerns over urban crime, which authorities say has impacted businesses, residents, and the overall sense of security in the city.
Addressing the public, President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring safety of everyone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, security is non-negotiable for a modern capital city like Nairobi.”
We will and must make Nairobi City safe for citizens, visitors, and investors and businesses alike,” Ruto said.
The president’s directive gives the Interior Ministry a two-month timeline to prepare and present the operational framework for the specialized unit, after which it will be implemented to strengthen law enforcement and rapid response capabilities.

The president highlighted that the collaboration between the national government and Nairobi City County is already underway.
“Our cooperation with the Nairobi City County government, ladies and gentlemen, was beginning today. This partnership is already visible in the city of Nairobi,” he added.
The government believes that a specialized unit will help respond faster to incidents, deter criminal activity, and create a safer environment for all.
President Ruto concluded his remarks with a strong reaffirmation of the government’s priorities:
“We must make Nairobi safe,” he said, underlining the importance of security for economic growth, tourism, and quality of life in the capital.
