Thousands of Nairobi residents, including most estates, will face a 26-hour water shutdown.
This follows a notice from Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd on Wednesday, February 18, stating that it will temporarily shut down the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant.
The water treatment plant will be temporarily shut down from February 20 2026, at 06:00 am to February 21 2026, at 08:00 am to carry out essential works aimed at improving production efficiency.
“The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company will temporarily shut down the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant from 20th February 2026 at 06:00 am to 21 February 2026 at 08:00 am to carry out essential works aimed at improving production efficiency,” read the notice.
Nairobi Areas to be Affected by Water Shutdown
According to Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd, this exercise will result in water supply interruptions in the following areas:
- Westlands/Lavington areas — Riverside Drive, Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive,Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hedred, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloght Gardens, Olle Ndume Road, King’ara Road, Riara Road, and surrounding environs.
- Kileleshwa – Kandara Road, Gichugu Road, Mazeras Road, Mboont Road, Othaya Road, Kaputet, Laikipia Road, Gathungurt, DoD, St. Georges School Tembere Road, and environs.
University of Nairobi vicinity, University of Nairobi (UoN) main campus, customers along Mamlaka Line, and Valley Road.
- Kilimani – Argwings Kodhek Road (from Chaka Road to Hurlingham). Hurlingham Shopping Centre and environs, Mtito Andel Road, Kindaruma Road, Rose Avenue, Lower George Padmore Road, Daystar University, Denis Pritt Road, Coptic Hospital, and surrounding areas.
- Dagoretti/Kawangware/Waithaka areas – Lower Gitanga Road, parts of Kawangware, Sunset Estate, Sohill City Estates, Kagira, Kagondo, Muhurt Road, Upper Kabiria, Mithonge, Kamwanya, Kahuho Road, Ngina Road, Kikuyu Road, Watthaka, Ndwaru Road, Upper Watthaka, Gachut, Kirigo, Dagoretti Market, and Mariguini.
- Uthiru/Mutuini areas – Uthiru Muthua area, Muchugla Road, Mutego, Mutuini and environs, Gatina and its surrounding areas.

- Jamhuri/Upper Hill/KMH vicinity – Bishop Magua, Kabarnet Road, parts of Joseph Kangethe Road, Muchal Drive (from Ngung Road to Mbaruk Road). Jamhuri Estate, Upper Hill areas, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), KEMRI Offices, Highvtew 1&2, Kenyatta Market, and environs.
- Kibera and environs – Makina, Karanja Road & environs, Fort Jesus, Olympic, Kibera Kianda, parts of Gatwekera, parts of Ayarny, Kibera Mwembent, Makongeni environs, Kwa DC, Lindi, KEMRI Flats (Mbagathi Way), Highrise Estate.
- Kang’otho/Togo Flats area – Kinoo Road/Joseph Kangethe Junction-Togo Flats, Kang’ethe Greens (Upper Rats).
Kangemi/Loresho areas – Kangemi, Mountain View Estate, Thiongo Road, Water Front, Loresho Springs, and environs.
- Langata/Nairobi West/Madaraka areas – Southlands Estate (Jordan Court, Sinal Court, Genests Court, Amant Court, Kwetu Court, Southend Court), Park 1 and Ngat 2 Extension, Madaraka, Hima Gardens and Stwaka, Funguo Estate, Akila 2 & environs, Rangers Court, Leeban B, Nairobi West Shopping Centre.
- Karen and surrounding areas – Bogani East Road, Muirt Lane, Forest Edge, Mukindurt Road, Muricho Road, Mukoma Road, Kisembe East, Magadi Road, Ndorobo Road, Kikent Road, Ndovu Road, Kifaru Road, Tandara Road, Mutamalyo, Mundenderu Road, Kikent Close, Korongo Road, Swara Lodge environs, Quere Lane, Langata South Road, Mukayeti West, Mukoyeti East, Mukoyeti Road, Langata South Road (between Boganit East Road and Ushirika), May East, Dalat, Royale, Kuwinda Road, Kufuga Road, Kortobos, Twiga Hill, Ushirika, Masai West, Hardy, Millima, Simba Hill, Giraffe Centre, Tumbill, Macushla, Bogani Road, Nzohe, Kasuku, Kwarara, Silanga Road, Kumbe Road, Comboni, Mhagathi Ridge.
- Ngara/Gigiri/Upper Hili diplomatic areas – Ngara area, Forest Road, Desal Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, Muranga Road, Park Road, Gigiri, Whispers Avenue, Village Market, UNEP, and US Embassy.
Furthermore, the company appealed to all affected customers to use the available water sparingly during this interruption period and to store sufficient quantities where possible.
At the same time, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Ltd. apologised for the inconvenience caused.
“Any inconvenience is highly regretted,” said the Company.
About Sasumua Water Treatment Plant
The Sasumua Water Treatment Plant is one of the major facilities responsible for supplying treated drinking water to residents of Nairobi and its surrounding areas. Located in Nyandarua County near the Aberdare Ranges, the plant receives raw water from Sasumua Dam, which collects rainwater from the Aberdare catchment.

The facility treats the water through filtration and disinfection processes to ensure it is safe for human consumption before it is transmitted to Nairobi through a network of pipelines.
The plant plays a crucial role in supporting Nairobi’s water supply alongside other sources such as Ndakaini and Ruiru dams.
