A new political alliance is taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election after the Jubilee Party and the Party of National Unity (PNU) agreed to work together in a move widely seen as strengthening Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s bargaining power within the Opposition.
The Jubilee Party has already endorsed Fred Matiang’i as its presidential aspirant for the 2027 race, citing his character, leadership credentials, and proven track record in public service.
In a significant boost to the former Interior Cabinet Secretary, PNU resolved that it will not field a presidential candidate and will instead support Dr. Matiang’i’s candidature.
The announcement was made by PNU Secretary-General Frank Walukwe, who was flanked by Jubilee Party officials, including Dr. Matiang’i, Jeremiah Kioni, and PNU’s Peter Munya, during a joint press conference.
The leaders said the pact signals the beginning of a broader collaboration aimed at consolidating Opposition forces ahead of 2027.
The two parties emphasized that their agreement goes beyond a simple endorsement and forms part of a larger strategy to unite like-minded political outfits.
“The parties commit to working jointly with other like-minded parties within the Opposition to develop a comprehensive working framework, which will be formally adopted and signed at an appropriate time,” Mr. Ole Kenta said.
The leaders indicated that formal structures and agreements would be unveiled once consultations with other Opposition stakeholders are complete.

The alliance carries historical significance. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta rode to power on a Jubilee Party ticket, while his predecessor, the late Mwai Kibaki, was re-elected on a PNU ticket in 2007.
This historical connection gives the pact renewed symbolic weight, especially in Mount Kenya, the political stronghold of both former presidents.
As leader of the Jubilee Party, Kenyatta is widely believed to have approved the developments, even though he was not present at the announcement.

According to insiders, aligning the Kibaki and Kenyatta political vehicles behind Dr. Matiang’i is intended to make his candidacy more appealing in the Mount Kenya region.
At the same time, political observers note that the alliance could also position Dr. Matiang’i for a solo presidential bid in 2027 should efforts to build consensus within the United Opposition prove unsuccessful.
With 2027 fast approaching, the Jubilee-PNU pact marks one of the clearest signals yet that realignments are underway and that Dr. Matiang’i is preparing for a high-stakes political contest.
