Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Ken Ng’ondi has dismissed reports claiming that a motion of impeachment against Governor Johnson Sakaja has been tabled on the floor of the House.

Ken said the information circulating on various media outlets that Sakaja is facing an impeachment after the recently signed cooperation agreement between the National Government and Nairobi City County is false.

“As the Speaker of the County, there has not been a single day when I received a motion to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja,” Ng’ondi said during an interview on Wednesday night.

Speaker Dismisses Reports Claiming That an Impeachment Motion Has Been Filed Against Sakaja

According to the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, the reports about Sakaja’s impeachment circulating on social media are merely rumours, allegedly sponsored by his political opponents.

Ken added that those rumours are just meant to undermine Sakaja’s administration and create unnecessary political tension.

He reiterated that he has not received any notice of motion from any member of the County Assembly to impeach the Nairobi County Governor.

“As the Speaker, there has not been a single day when I have received a notice from any member to impeach Governor Sakaja, there is none,” he said.

Ken stated that no one can simply have a piece of paper and start collecting signatures to impeach Sakaja without the document being certified by the Office of the Speaker.

“Even the rumours you are hearing about collecting signatures are false. There is no way anyone can bypass the formal certification process to impeach Governor Sakaja,” the Speaker said.

He insisted that in the case of governor impeachments, a formal procedure must always be followed.

The Nairobi County Assembly Speaker also stated that any member who wishes to file an impeachment motion must support it with valid grounds for impeachment.

In September 2025, Nairobi County MCAs initiated an impeachment motion against Governor Johnson Sakaja, citing poor service delivery, mismanagement of county resources, and strained relations with the assembly.

President William Ruto and the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga intervened separately by meeting UDA- and ODM-affiliated MCAs, convincing them to suspend the bid for at least a month to allow Sakaja time to address the grievances.
