US President Donald Trump has directed his government to release files related to extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
In a statement dated Friday, February 20, 2026, the US president specifically called on the Secretary of War and other relevant departments and agencies to begin identifying and releasing those government files.
The US president said his decision was driven by growing public interest.
“I will be directing the Secretary of War and other relevant departments and agencies to begin the process of identifying and releasing government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs),” said the US president.
Additionally, President Trump directed his administration to release all other information connected to these highly complex but extremely interesting and important matters.
His directive comes days after former US President Barack Obama, in a podcast interview with Brian Tyler Cohen on February 14, was asked whether aliens are real. Obama responded, “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them,” sparking curiosity and public debate.
Following the viral reaction, Obama posted a statement on his Instagram account on February 15, 2026, to clarify his earlier remarks.
He explained that in a vast universe, the “statistical odds” of life existing elsewhere are high, but the chances of extraterrestrial visitation remain low.

Meanwhile, President Trump, while addressing the media aboard Air Force One, accused Obama of making a serious mistake by allegedly revealing classified information.
“Well, he gave classified information. He’s not supposed to be doing that. Well, I don’t know if they’re real or not. I can tell you he gave classified information. He’s not supposed to be doing that. He made a big mistake. He took it out of classified information,” said Trump.
He added that his administration could consider declassifying relevant records to provide clarity and ease the controversy surrounding the issue.

“I don’t have an opinion on it. I never talk about it. A lot of people do. I may get him out of trouble by declassifying,” added the US president.
President Trump’s directive has also been welcomed by US Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina, who in October 2025 wrote to the Department of Defense, CIA, NSA, and the Director of National Intelligence demanding the release and disclosure of classified and internal government records related to UAPs.
“Tonight, President Trump is directing full disclosure of UAP and UFO files. In October, I wrote to DoD, CIA, NSA, and DNI demanding exactly that. The truth belongs to the American people,” said the US representative.
