Charles Kanjama, the Newly Elected President of the Law Society of Kenya

Charles Njiru Kanjama, born on November 17, 1977, grew up in Nairobi in a household that valued education, debate, and discipline.

These early influences shaped his curiosity for law, governance, and public service-a foundation that continues to guide his professional and civic engagements.

Kanjama’s educational path:

  • LL.B (Second Class Upper)- University of Nairobi (2001)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Law, Kenya School of Law (2002)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA‑K) and Certified Public Secretary (CPS‑K)- reflecting a strong grounding in finance, governance, and corporate management
  • Higher Diploma (IMIS)- Strathmore College
  • MBA- Strathmore Business School, focusing on legal firm management and governance
  • Currently pursuing an LL.M atthe  University of Nairobi, specializing in urban land value tax reform

This multidisciplinary training allows him to navigate law, business, and governance seamlessly-an uncommon combination among legal professionals in Kenya.

Building a Legal Career

Kanjama began his career at TripleOKLaw (Ochieng’ Onyango Kibet & Ohaga Advocates), gaining extensive litigation experience from 2001 to 2005.

He then worked with LawAfrica Publishing Ltd as editor and legal manager, contributing to the East Africa Law Reports, sharpening his research, analytical, and editorial skills.

Earlier, his work as an IT trainer and programmer at Strathmore College laid the foundation for his later expertise in intellectual property and information technology law.

Professional and Public Service Leadership

Beyond law firms, Kanjama has held several high-profile roles:

  • Board Member, NTSA-Chaired technical and audit committees (2013-2015)
  • Trust Administrator, Strathmore Educational Trust-Oversaw governance and compliance
  • Chairman, Kenya Christian Professionals Forum (KCPF) and Vice Chair, Africa Christian Professionals Forum (ACPF)

Kanjama’s practice spans corporate, constitutional, and public-interest litigation, including:

  • Representation in Supreme Court election petition matters as amicus curiae
  • Advisory and representation for key institutions such as the Judicial Service Commission and Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board

  • Council Member and Treasurer (2012-2014)
  • Convenor, Committee on Legislation and Law Reform

His deep institutional knowledge equips him to address challenges facing the Bar, from professional ethics to advocacy on law reform and access to justice.

Elected President with a manifesto under the RIPE framework -Rule of Law, Integrity, Practice & Welfare, and Engagement, Kanjama pledges to:

  • Complete key LSK projects, including Wakili Towers
  • Establish an LSK Training Institute
  • Publish an annual Rule of Law Report
  • Engage constructively with the government and judiciary on law reform

Educator and Thought Leader

Kanjama lectures at Strathmore University, teaching Criminal Law, Legal Systems, and Healthcare Law.

He also contributes to national discourse through media commentary and legal publications, emphasizing constitutionalism, governance, and ethical practice.
