Ministry of Defence Announces Public Auction of Vehicles

The Ministry of Defence has announced a public auction for the disposal of casted vehicles, equipment and boarded general stores in multiple regions across the country.

In an official auction notice dated February 25, the Ministry said the sale will be conducted through various tenders covering Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nanyuki and Garissa regions.

“The Ministry of Defence (MOD) will sell by Public Auction casted vehicles, equipment and general stores through the following tenders,” the notice reads.

The disposal exercise will be conducted on an “as-is-where-is” basis.

Interested bidders will be allowed to view the items between March 9 and March 26, 2026, during working days from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, excluding public holidays.

The viewing will take place at:

  • KNB Mtongwe (Mombasa Region)
  • 43 OCC Nanyuki (Nanyuki Region)
  • DEFOD Kahawa (Nairobi Region)
  • 23 OCC Lanet, Nakuru (Nakuru Region)
  • 63 OCC Garissa (Garissa Region)

The Ministry stated: “The vehicles, equipment, and boarded general stores can be viewed… starting from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm after purchasing the catalogue.”

Catalogue and Bid Deposit Requirements

Catalogues detailing the items on sale will be available during viewing days at designated offices upon payment of a non-refundable fee of Ksh 1,000 per set.

Additionally, bidders must pay a refundable bid number deposit of: Ksh 50,000 for vehicles and equipment and Ksh 30,000 for general stores.

“Each Bid number will only be allowed to bid for one Lot ONLY,” the notice states.

The Ministry further emphasized that original catalogues and receipts for both the catalogue and bid number deposits must be presented at the auction entrance to participate.

Auction Dates and Sale Yards

The public auctions will be conducted at the respective sale yards on the following dates:

  • 63 OCC Garissa – March 31, 2026
  • KNB Mtongwe – April 8, 2026
  • 43 OCC Nanyuki – April 14, 2026
  • 23 OCC Nakuru – April 21, 2026
  • DEFOD Kahawa – April 28, 2026

All auctions will begin at 10:00 am.

Successful bidders will be required to pay 25 percent of the bid amount immediately at the fall of the hammer.

The remaining balance must be cleared within 14 days.

“Failure to which the award will be cancelled and the deposit forfeited,” the Ministry warned.

Buyers must collect purchased items within 30 days after full payment.

Failure to do so will attract storage charges of 1 percent of the bid price per day, up to a maximum of three months.

Items not collected within that period will be forfeited along with any monies paid.

Strict Conditions for Motor Vehicles

The Ministry outlined strict regulations for motor vehicles purchased during the auction.

“Bidders who will purchase motor vehicle(s) will be required to ensure that the vehicles are painted with non-military colour patterns (where applicable) before being put on the road.”

It further cautioned:

“No EX-Military vehicle should be put on the road with EX-Military number plates; otherwise, the vehicle will be impounded immediately.”

Successful bidders must also obtain clearance from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) before collecting their items.

Reserve Price Clause

The sale will be subject to a reserve price, with the Ministry reserving the right to reject bids that fall below the set threshold.

“Ministry of Defence reserves the right to reject any bid below the reserve price and does not bind itself to give the reasons for the rejection.”

The auction presents an opportunity for individuals and businesses to acquire vehicles and equipment, subject to compliance with the outlined regulations.
