State House Land Grab Exposed as Govt Moves to Reclaim Encroached Property

Share

A new revelation has emerged that private developers, including a nominated MCA have grabbed portions of land surrounding various State House properties across the country.

While appearing before the Administration and Internal Security Committee, State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito acknowledged that some parcels of land adjacent to State Houses and State Lodges have been encroached upon, posing significant security risks.

Metito told Members of Parliament that the government has already recovered 100 acres of grabbed land in Kakamega, with efforts now shifting to reclaim land in Nakuru and Kisumu.

Comptroller Reveals Grabbed Land Around State House Facilities

He revealed that hundreds of acres of State House land in different counties had been illegally acquired, complicating planned renovation works.

“Almost all these State Lodges and State Houses had their land encroached upon. It is a gradual process, and we are reclaiming them one by one. Even in Eldoret, we had to repossess land from a private club,” Metito told the committee.

He added that plans are underway to fully reclaim all encroached land to restore security and allow renovation works to proceed.

The committee, chaired by Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo, sought clarification on measures being taken to improve the condition and security of State Houses and State Lodges.

Metito explained that widespread land grabbing had significantly hampered renovation efforts, as much of the land meant for expansion and security buffer zones had fallen into private hands.

MPs Express Concern Over the Extent of Encroachment

Members of Parliament expressed concern over the extent of the encroachment and questioned how private individuals managed to acquire protected government land.

Tongoyo cited Kisumu State Lodge as one of the most affected facilities.

“When we visited Kisumu, despite ongoing renovations, there were serious land disputes. It is alleged that the county government took over part of the State Lodge, and a nominated MCA even occupied one house,” Tongoyo said.

MPs also noted that several State Houses and Lodges inspected last year were in poor condition, underscoring the urgency of repossessing the grabbed land and completing renovations.

The committee further inquired about plans to establish a State House in northern Kenya.

In response, Metito confirmed that renovations are ongoing in several facilities and revealed that plans to establish a State House in the northern region are currently underway.
