The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has responded to a viral video circulating on social media showing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua purchasing medicine at a pharmacy.

In a statement dated Thursday, February 26, 2026, the society condemned the recording, terming it a breach of privacy and healthcare confidentiality.

“The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK), the professional body representing pharmacists in Kenya, has taken note of circulating footage showing a high-profile public figure being recorded while purchasing and taking medicine at a pharmacy outlet,” read part of the statement.

The Society stressed that confidentiality in healthcare is not optional; it is a fundamental ethical and professional obligation.

PSK further stated that both pharmacists and pharmaceutical technologists are regulated practitioners under Kenyan law and are bound by professional codes of conduct.

However, the society noted that it is not yet clear which licensed professionals were present at the pharmacy in question and confirmed that it is undertaking due diligence to verify the identity and licensing status of the outlet and the individuals involved.

“Regardless of public profile or status, every Kenyan has the right to confidential healthcare,” PSK stated.

PSK Raises Alarm Over Patient Privacy and Professional Conduct

The society added that this incident highlights the need for pharmacy outlets to be operated under the supervision of qualified and licensed professionals who adhere to ethical standards.

It stated that this is crucial for protecting patient confidentiality, maintaining public trust, and preserving the integrity of the healthcare system.

PSK said it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of pharmaceutical practice and will take appropriate action if any violation of professional conduct is confirmed.

The pharmacists’ response comes after viral footage was captured during Gachagua’s recent political tour in the Gusii region.

The video appears to have been recorded secretly by a pharmaceutical attendant or pharmacist behind the counter.

In the video, Gachagua is seen being served at the counter, possibly purchasing painkillers or medication related to blood pressure.

The clip has sparked mixed reactions, with the majority of citizens condemning the act of recording him and sharing the footage on social media.
