Kenya has officially launched Lenacapavir, a long-acting injection for HIV prevention, marking a significant step in efforts to reduce new infections and strengthen the national HIV response.

The launch presided over by Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale on February 26, 2026, took place at Riruta Health Centre in Nairobi.

The Ministry of Health described the rollout as a major boost to the country’s prevention strategy.

Speaking during the event, CS Duale termed the introduction of Lenacapavir “a milestone in our prevention efforts,” noting that about 1.4 million Kenyans are currently living with HIV, with thousands of new infections recorded annually.

He emphasised the need to expand innovative prevention options to reverse transmission trends and better protect vulnerable populations.

Regulatory Approval and Safety Assurance

The Cabinet Secretary confirmed that the medicine has met all regulatory and procurement requirements under Kenyan law and health guidelines.

“Lenacapavir underwent rigorous international scientific review and local evaluation by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, with support from the Global Fund,” he said.
