KeNHA Sets Record Straight on Evicting Traders Along Murang’a Highway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has addressed claims that it intends to evict traders and demolish structures along Murang’a Highway.

In a statement dated Friday, February 27, 2026, the Authority flagged as fake a notice that has since gone viral.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a notice currently circulating online alleging that the Authority intends to clear encroachments within the road reserve along Murang’a Highway is false,” read part of the statement.

KeNHA said the notice is misleading, intended to create unnecessary anxiety, and does not reflect the true status of any ongoing operations by the Authority in the area.

It encouraged the public to verify any information shared on social media platforms through its official communication channels before circulating it.

The Authority stated that KeNHA remains committed to providing accurate and timely information and to ensuring the safety, integrity, and functionality of all national road infrastructure.

Details of the Fake Demolition Notice

The purported notice, dated February 27, 2026, indicated plans to clear all road encroachments, including stalls, kiosks, structures, and merchandise, along Murang’a Highway, with traders urged to comply within seven days of the notice.

“All traders operating within the road reserve along Murang’a Highway are hereby required to remove their stalls, kiosks, structures, and merchandise within seven (7) days from the date of this notice,” read the fake notice.

The notice stated that Eng Quinter Omondi authorised it and claimed that the demolitions were necessary to facilitate the construction of designated roadside stalls aimed at improving safety, reducing congestion, and ensuring orderly use of the highway corridor.

It further stated that traders who wished to continue operating after completion of the new stalls would be required to:

  • Pay an annual revenue fee of KSh 70,000 per stall;
  • Obtain valid approvals from the County Government.
  • Comply with KES, HCD, ETR, and the relevant provisions under the Act 2007.

It further stated that failure to comply would result in enforcement action in accordance with the law.
