Kenya Power Official Arrested for Cutting Electricity & Demanding Ksh 300,000 to Restore It

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a Kenya Power and Lighting Company employee over allegations of extorting Ksh 300,000 from a customer in exchange for reconnecting electricity at Runda Mumwe Estate.

In a statement, EACC said the suspect, Bernard Githinji Maina, a meter reader attached to the Runda sector, allegedly demanded the Ksh 300,000 from the complainant on January 24, 2026 to facilitate reconnection of power.

The Commission said Maina asked the customer to give him the bribe or he will increase the electricity bill to Ksh 2 million.

However, EACC said the suspect had connected the pwoer saying it was illegally connected even though the customer did not have nay pending bill.

“It is further alleged that the suspect threatened to have the customer billed Ksh 2,000,000 should he decline to pay the requested bribe,” EACC said.

“Investigations revealed that the suspect had disconnected power to the estate on October 25, 2025, citing an alleged illegal connection. The complainant had no outstanding electricity bill arrears.”

EACC Investigations

Upon receiving the report on February 27, 2026 the Commission conducted preliminary investigations and mounted an operation that led to the suspect’s arrest as he received Ksh 180,000 from the complainant at Runda Mumwe Estate.

He was escorted to Integrity Centre for processing and later taken to Kilimani Police Station where he spent the night.

He was released on the morning of Saturday, February 28, cash bail of Ksh 50,000 pending completion of investigations.

“The Commission reiterates its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points and enhancing the quality of public services for all citizens,” EACC said.
