Arsenal Vs Chelsea: Tactics, Squad News and Predictions

Share

The pressure in the Premier League title race is intensifying for Arsenal as they prepare to host Chelsea in yet another high-stakes London derby.

After a dominant 4-1 demolition of bitter rivals Tottenham, the Gunners return to the Emirates determined to build momentum and underline that their championship ambitions remain firmly on course following a brief decline in form.

Mikel Arteta’s side will be eager to deliver another convincing performance in front of their home supporters and keep pace at the top.

Chelsea’s most recent trip to London is still fresh in the memory.

In the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash at the same ground, Kai Havertz struck a dramatic late winner against his former club to secure a 4-2 aggregate triumph.

Liam Rosenior’s tactical setup that night sparked intense debate, adding another layer of intrigue to this weekend’s encounter.

However, the Blues have struggled for consistency in recent weeks.

Disappointing Premier League draws at home to relegation-threatened Leeds and Burnley have taken the shine off a routine victory over bottom-placed Wolves and a commanding 4-0 FA Cup win against Hull.

Reflecting on those dropped points, Rosenior admitted his side had effectively “set fire to four points.”

Chelsea’s tendency to concede late goals continues to raise concerns, while their disciplinary issues remain under scrutiny.

Heading into the weekend, they sit sixth in the table with 45 points, three points adrift of fourth and fifth-placed Manchester United and Liverpool, with a demanding run of fixtures looming.

Managers Press

Rosenior

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has dropped a significant bombshell ahead of his side’s highly-anticipated Premier League encounter with Arsenal, admitting that he has been forced to compromise on his tactical vision.

Since taking the reins at Stamford Bridge in January, the 41-year-old has sought to implement a more expansive style of play, but he has now conceded that the physical demands of his philosophy are currently beyond the reach of his squad.

The Blues travel to the Emirates Stadium looking to maintain a promising run of form, yet Rosenior has been surprisingly candid about the limitations he faces.

Despite an unbeaten start in the league, the manager revealed that a fear of breaking his players has led to a major watering down of his tactical demands.

It is a startling admission from a man tasked with closing the gap on the division’s elite, especially as Chelsea prepare to face a relentless Gunners side known for their physical intensity.

Speaking to the Chelsea official website, Rosenior explained that his hands are tied by the current conditioning of the group and the timing of his arrival mid-season.

“It’s okay in your mind to say, ‘I want to play this way,’ but you have to tailor that to the players and their experiences and where they are at this stage of the season.

“You can’t just come in and completely change their training schedule or what they’re used to because they’ll get injured. There’s a lot that goes into it, so this is a longer-term thing for me to address.”

The manager’s pragmatism is rooted in a desire to avoid a medical room crisis, even if it means delaying the full implementation of his high-energy blueprint.

“Fatigue is a natural occurrence of being a professional footballer. It’s about overcoming those moments when you are tired and making sure you look after yourself, and that the training levels and loads are correct.”

At the moment, my focus and the way we’ve worked is game by game; what’s best for these players to win and what’s best for us to win each game. That’s how it’s going to be until the end of the season,” he added, tailoring his tactics to the specific needs of the squad.

Arteta

On Injury Updates

“We’re waiting for tomorrow, the last training session, to understand if we have one or two available from last week.”

“We are hopeful. Max will play some minutes tonight with the under-21s, Kai will train tomorrow and Ben, let’s see.”

Arteta remains cautiously optimistic about the availability of Kai Havertz and Ben White, while Max Dowman continues his recovery with the youth side.

On Chelsea & Preparation

“It’s about the preparation… and the preparation gives you confidence and the right emotional state.”

“What we did two weeks or two years ago is irrelevant. Every game and context is different.”

Despite Arsenal’s strong recent record against Chelsea, Arteta insists past results count for nothing and stresses the importance of earning the right to win.

On Staying Grounded

“Not too high, not too low.”

“You cannot be happy and sad every single day… You cannot give your best with that.”

Arteta emphasized emotional stability following the win over Spurs, maintaining balance regardless of results.

On Viktor Gyokeres’ Form

“He’s undoubtedly an incredible striker.”

“We need to feed into his quality… I think we are on the right trajectory.”

The manager praised Gyokeres’ impact and believes his growing understanding of the team and league is boosting his performances.

On Title Ambitions

“When you play like this, you only want to be first.”

“Let’s go game by game.”

Arteta dismissed talk of defining months or quadruple dreams, focusing instead on consistency and progression across competitions.

On Champions League Draw (Bayer Leverkusen)

“We are very excited… Now we need to analyse them and find ways to be better than them.”

Arsenal’s focus remains firmly on preparation as they gear up for the knockout stages.

On Team Confidence

“I want to see signs of confidence, enthusiasm, and a lot of will to win.”

Arteta says the squad shows those traits every day in training.

Tactics

Chelsea

Chelsea’s tactics under new manager Liam Rosenior (appointed early 2026) focus on possession with purpose, using a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3 to create a 3-2-5 or 3-3-4 attacking structure.

He emphasizes rapid, detailed, and vertical passing to break lines rather than slow buildup, with high-pressing, man-oriented defensive systems.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta employs a highly structured, possession-based 4-3-3 system that evolves into a 3-2-5 or 2-3-5 in attack, characterized by inverting full-backs’ positional rotation, and rapid, high-intensity counter-pressing.

His tactics focus on creating central overloads, manipulating space with five vertical channels, and using intelligent, fluid movements from players like Kai Havertz to breach compact defenses.

Head-to-head

The two London clubs first locked horns in 1907  when the Gunners were called Woolwich Arsenal and they have now played each other 214 times.

Arsenal have won 87 of those encounters, while Chelsea have won 66, and 61 games have ended as draws.

The Gunners have dominated many of the more recent fixtures and are unbeaten against the Blues in eight Premier League games, and 10 in all competitions.

Earlier this year, Arsenal beat Chelsea over two League Cup semifinal legs, winning 3-2 at Stamford Bridge and 1-0 at the Emirates.

Chelsea did manage to hold the Gunners to a 1-1 draw in their last league game back in November 2025.

Predictions

The 4-1 victory over Spurs restored Arsenal’s confidence in the camp, while Chelsea remained a flawed side.

Now that Manchester City has closed the gap to two points Arsenal might be ruthless to Chelsea.
