Passenger Recounts Moments Aboard Helicopter That Killed MP Johana Ng’eno

Share

The fatal helicopter crash on Saturday, February 28, 2026, that claimed the life of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno and five others has reopened deep wounds among those who have previously survived near‑misses in the same aircraft.

The private helicopter, a Eurocopter AS350 registered 5Y‑DSB, went down in Chepkiep, Mosop Constituency, around 4:45 p.m. after attempting to take off following a forced landing due to heavy rains.

All six people on board died when the aircraft burst into flames on impact.

In a Facebook message shared publicly, Osborn Yogo George, a digital creator, motivational speaker, and public servant at the National Treasury and Economic Planning, recounts harrowing past experiences on the same helicopter that are now being revisited in the wake of the tragedy.

George’s message describes multiple close calls:

“I left Nairobi on this chopper to Kisumu as a single passenger and landed within the Molasses plant compound… On the actual day, this thing couldn’t start… we were forced down and had to wait around 2 hours for another chopper.”

He went on to describe another terrifying journey from Migori to Kisumu during a storm:

“We approached Kisumu from the Nyakach side… the storm hit so hard… we were pushed deep into the lake with heavy wind and rain… We prayed!!! …God saved us and we landed.”

George concluded with a vow:

“This was the last day I hired this chopper and vowed never to again!!! So seeing that it went down yesterday… hurts me!! This thing ought to have been off the air!”

These accounts vividly underline the anxiety and concern that some passengers had previously felt about the aircraft’s safety.

Details of the Fatal Crash

On the day of the accident, the helicopter was transporting MP Johana Ng’eno Kipyegon, a three‑term legislator known for his work on housing, urban planning, and public works, when it crashed in Mosop.

Police identified the fatal crash location in the Cabiet Sub‑location, where investigators say the aircraft first made an emergency landing due to poor weather before attempting to take off again.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula formally informed Parliament of Ng’eno’s untimely death, mourning him as a dedicated public servant.

President William Ruto also expressed profound grief:

“My friend, Mheshimiwa Ng’eno, was a progressive and devoted servant of the people… He was focused, vocal and fearless…”

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called for a “thorough and speedy investigation” into the crash circumstances.

Official Response and Investigation

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has activated its Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) to determine the causes of the crash.

The authority expressed condolences to the families of those killed and pledged to release verified findings in due course.

Local police and emergency services have recovered remains from the charred wreckage, and post‑mortem procedures are underway.

As the country awaits the official investigation’s findings, the memory of MP Johana Ngeno and the haunting personal testimony shared by Osborn Yogo George highlight broader concerns about safety, accountability, and the risks of private air travel in Kenya.
