KDA Calls for Immediate Suspension of Controversial Oral Health Degree

Share

The Kenya Dental Association (KDA) has raised concerns over the recent rollout of a Bachelor of Science in Oral Health programme, citing unclear accreditation and professional recognition.

In a press statement issued on March 4, 2026, the association urged authorities to immediately suspend the programme and conduct a full investigation.

According to KDA, the new programme was developed without consultation with statutory regulators or professional stakeholders.

“Professional training in healthcare must be based on established legal and consultative frameworks,” the statement reads.

The association warns that the absence of proper regulatory oversight could lead to confusion and compromise patient safety.

The KDA emphasized that under the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (Cap 253), there is currently no legally recognized category known as an “Oral Health Practitioner.”

Only graduates from accredited Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programmes are legally permitted to offer the full range of dental services in Kenya.

Demand for Immediate Action

The association has called for an immediate halt to the programme, stating,“We demand that any further progression of this programme be stopped until regulatory clarity is established.”

KDA further urged the Commission for University Education (CUE) to engage with statutory regulators and professional bodies to ensure that all healthcare training adheres strictly to legal and professional standards.

Regulatory Oversight Essential

KDA stressed the importance of national standards, regulatory oversight, and licensure pathways in safeguarding both professional practice and public health.

“Regulatory clarity and adherence to professional standards are essential to prevent confusion and unlawful professional training,” the association noted.

The Kenya Dental Association has committed to monitoring the situation closely and expects swift action from relevant authorities to protect both the integrity of the dental profession and patient safety across the country.
