Kenya Met Issues 7-Day Rainfall Alert for Multiple Counties

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a seven-day heavy rainfall advisory warning that heavy rains are expected to continue across several parts of the country from March 3 to March 9, 2026.

In the alert released on March 3 at 4:00 p.m., Kenya Met indicated that rainfall exceeding 20 mm in 24 hours is likely in multiple regions, with the rains expected to intensify and peak between March 4 and March 7 before gradually reducing in most areas by March 8.

However, heavy rainfall is expected to continue in some regions until March 9.

“The current heavy rainfall of more than 20 mm in 24 hours is expected to continue across several parts of the country from March 3 to March 9, 2026,” Kenya Met said.

Kenya Met further noted that the rainfall is “likely to intensify and peak between March 4 and March 7, 2026, before decreasing in most areas by March 8, 2026.”

Despite the expected reduction, heavy rainfall exceeding 20 mm in 24 hours is forecast to persist in the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, parts of the Central Highlands, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coastal region until March 9.

Counties Affected

The advisory lists several counties expected to be impacted by the heavy rains.

They include ;Turkana, Samburu, Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Isiolo, Marsabit, Garissa, and parts of Wajir and Mandera.

Advisory and Safety Measures

Kenya Met has cautioned residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flooding, flash floods, and poor visibility.

In its guidance, the department warned that “Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream.”

Members of the public have also been advised to avoid driving or walking through moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows during thunderstorms to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

The advisory classifies the severity level as moderate to heavy, with a moderate probability of occurrence ranging between 33 and 66 percent.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official Kenya Met communication channels for any changes or further updates regarding the ongoing weather situation.
