KeNHA Issues Five Safety Directives to Drivers Amid Heavy Rains

Share

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a public notice warning motorists and other road users to exercise extreme caution following forecasts of heavy and persistent rainfall across the country.

In a statement dated March 4, 2026, the Authority cited projections from the Kenya Meteorological Department, which has “forecast persistent rainfall across many parts of the country this season, with moderate to heavy downpours expected in both urban and rural areas.”

The notice further warns that “increased flood risks and reduced visibility are already affecting road travel.”

KeNHA also referenced an advisory from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which has “issued a road safety alert due to heavy rains, fog, and slippery road conditions.”

The agencies cautioned that the ongoing rains are likely to heighten the risk of accidents, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, while also causing traffic snarl-ups and possible temporary road closures.

Safety Guidelines for Motorists and Pedestrians

In light of the situation, KeNHA urged all road users to adhere to safety measures strictly. Among the directives issued are:

  • Slow down and maintain a safe following distance.
  • Avoid overtaking during heavy rain or fog.
  • Do not attempt to drive through flooded sections.
  • Motorcyclists and cyclists should wear reflective gear for visibility.
  • Pedestrians should avoid walking close to fast-moving traffic during heavy rainfall.

The Authority emphasized that heavy downpours may result in “traffic delays, temporary road closures, and increased accident risks, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.”

Ongoing Monitoring

KeNHA assured the public that it will continue monitoring the evolving weather situation and respond swiftly to affected road sections.

Road users are encouraged to stay updated through official channels and plan their journeys carefully to avoid unnecessary risks.
