Kenya Power has explained why several parts of Nairobi are experiencing power outages.
In a statement issued on Saturday, March 7, 2026, the electricity distributor said the blackouts were caused by flooding at one of its key substations, the South C Substation, after part of the facility’s boundary wall collapsed during the heavy rains on Friday night.
“The floods, unfortunately, caused flooding in our South C Substation after part of the boundary wall collapsed,” read part of the statement.
Kenya Power Responds to Power Outages in Several Nairobi Areas
According to the utility firm, the floods disrupted electricity supply to several areas, including South B, South C, Nairobi West, Madaraka Estate, Lang’ata, Ngumo Estate, the Industrial Area, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Kenya Power said its engineers are already on site, carefully assessing the damage to electrical equipment and working to carry out the necessary tests and repairs.
“Where possible, we are switching some customers to adjacent substations to ease the impact,” the company added.
The utility firm apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked residents for their patience and understanding. Customers are urged to report any power incidents via *977#.

Kenya Power’s statement comes amid heavy rainfall witnessed in major parts of Nairobi on the evening of Friday, March 6, 2026.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, several areas were affected by flooding, including Pipeline and Embakasi along Kware Road, Mukuru (Kwa Njenga, Reuben, and Viwandani), Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, South B, South C, Nairobi West, Lang’ata, Umoja 3, Chokaa, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, Loresho, and parts of Westlands.
Major roads impacted included sections of the Central Business District (CBD), Uhuru Highway, Mbagathi Way, Mombasa Road between South C and the JKIA exit to Kyumbi, Thika Superhighway between Githurai and Kahawa Sukari, Jogoo Road, Lunga Lunga Road, Enterprise Road, and Lang’ata Road near T-Mall.
According to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, in a statement dated Saturday, March 7, 2026, the Nairobi City County Government has put in place comprehensive measures to safeguard lives and property amid the ongoing rains.
“The Nairobi City County Government wishes to update members of the public on the current rainfall situation and the comprehensive measures currently in place to safeguard lives and property across the capital,” part of the statement read.
