Kenya Red Cross and Sakaja Advice Nairobi Residents on Flood Safety

Share

Residents of Nairobi have been urged to follow flood safety measures amid heavy rains in the city.

The Kenya Red Cross Society and the Nairobi City County Government, led by Governor Johnson Sakaja, issued an advisory warning residents to remain alert as rising water levels increase the risk of flooding in various areas.

“As we continue with search and rescue operations across affected areas, you can help make our work easier by following these flood safety tips and avoiding risky areas. The organizations shared safety tips aimed at preventing accidents, injuries, and loss of life during floods,” the Authority stated.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to evacuate to higher ground immediately when flooding begins. Authorities warned that waiting too long to evacuate could expose residents to danger.

The Kenya Red Cross Society cautioned residents against walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters. Shallow moving water can be powerful enough to knock a person down or sweep them away.

Residents are also advised to switch off electricity at the main switch if water enters their homes or buildings.

Drivers have also been warned against attempting to drive through flooded roads. Officials stated that as little as 30 centimetres of moving water can sweep away a vehicle.
