Why Major Nairobi Estates Face Water Shortages Despite Heavy Rains

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has announced disruptions in water supply across several estates in Nairobi after heavy overnight rains and flooding damaged multiple water distribution lines.

In a customer notice released on March 7,2026, the utility provider said the damage occurred following intense rainfall that caused flooding in several parts of the city, affecting key pipelines that supply water to residential areas.

“Nairobi Water wishes to notify its customers that the heavy rains from last night and consequent flooding have damaged several water distribution lines, affecting water supply to the following areas,” the notice stated.

Estates Affected by the Water Supply Disruption

According to the notice, several major pipelines were damaged, leading to interruptions in water supply across different estates.

The Outering Road Pipeline at the Nairobi River crossing was affected, disrupting supply to Buruburu Phase 1 and 2, Kariobangi South and North, Dandora 1, and parts of Mathare.

Another affected line is the Eastleigh-Kiambiu Pipeline, which supplies water to Eastleigh Section 3, Kiambiu, Jerusalem, Uhuru, Jericho, Ofafa, and Harambee estates.

The Korogocho-Dandora Pipeline was also damaged, affecting Korogocho, parts of Dandora 1, and Kariobangi North.

Additionally, damage to the Brookside Drive Distribution Line between Lower Kabete and Matundu Close Junction has disrupted supply along Lower Kabete Lane and Lower Kabete Road, particularly from the junction down to Karuna and Brookside Drive.

Technical Teams Mobilized for Repairs

The water utility said its technical teams have already been deployed to assess the damage and begin repairs in the affected areas.

“Technical teams have been mobilized and are on-site assessing damage,” the company said.

It added that flushing units, mobile workshops, and cranes have been deployed to speed up the repair works.

“Repairs are ongoing and others are being commenced immediately following assessment,” the notice added.

Teams are also monitoring river crossings to prevent further damage to the infrastructure.

Efforts to Restore Water Treatment

The company further revealed that debris from the floods has affected operations at the Mwaguu Intake, which supplies raw water for treatment at the Ngethu Water Treatment Plant.

“Unclogging of debris at Mwaguu Intake that is currently affecting water treatment at Ngethu Treatment Plant is ongoing,” the notice stated.

The plant is one of the major water treatment facilities serving Nairobi and its surrounding areas.

Nairobi Water Appeals for Patience

The water utility has apologized to residents for the inconvenience caused by the disruption and asked for patience as repair works continue.

“Any inconvenience is regretted and we ask for your patience as the team works to restore normal water supply.”

Repair works are ongoing as authorities race to restore normal water supply to the affected neighborhoods.
