Former Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has died in Turkey at the age of 55 after reportedly suffering a heart attack.
Firat, who led Kenya’s national football team for about three years before stepping down in December 2024, passed away on Sunday evening at Istanbul Airport.
At the time of his death, he was serving as the head coach of Lebanese club Nejmeh SC, where he had recently taken charge of the team that included Kenyan players Austin Odhiambo, Anthony Akumu, and Masoud Juma.
In a statement, the club confirmed that the Turkish tactician collapsed at the airport while travelling from Beirut to Adana shortly after departing Lebanon.
Nejmeh SC paid tribute to Firat, describing him as a dedicated professional who left a strong impression during his brief time at the club.
The management, staff, players, and supporters of the club expressed their condolences to his family and loved ones following the sudden loss.
“With great sadness and sorrow, Star Athletic Club mourns first-team coach Captain Engin Firat, who passed away following a sudden heart attack while at Istanbul Airport, on his way to Adana, a few hours after leaving Beirut for his country.”

“During the time he spent with the club, the deceased was known for his professional commitment and high ethics, and he left a good impression on the ranks of the team and among the members of the Star Club family,”the statement read.
“The management of the club, the technical and administrative staff, the players, and the audience of Al-Najma Club extend their deepest condolences and sincere condolences to his generous family and loved ones, asking God to shower him with His mercy and inspire them with patience and solace.”
The club highlighted Firat’s professionalism, discipline, and the positive influence he had on players and staff alike.
Firat is well-known in Kenyan football for his tenure as head coach of Harambee Stars.
