Grief After Missing Kenyan Student Found Dead in UK River

Share

A Kenyan family that had been anxiously searching for their daughter for weeks has been plunged into grief after the body of Edna Mmbali Ombakho, a Kenyan student who went missing in the United Kingdom, was discovered in a river.

Edna, 30, had been pursuing a Master’s degree at York St John University’s London campus and was living in Wraysbury, Berkshire, when she disappeared in early February.

Her body was reportedly recovered from a river on March 8, 2026, bringing a tragic end to weeks of desperate searching by her family, friends, and authorities.

Police in the UK have not yet released the official cause of death, saying investigations are still ongoing.

Disappearance Sparked Widespread Concern

Edna was last seen on February 1, 2026, after leaving her home for a walk in Wraysbury.

According to earlier reports, she never returned, triggering growing concern among her family and the Kenyan community.

Her relatives in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, raised the alarm after she failed to make her usual calls home- something they described as completely out of character.

According to her family, Edna had been in regular contact with them before her sudden disappearance.

Her father earlier revealed that she had last spoken with her mother, who lives in the United States, a day before she went missing.

Appeals and Search Efforts

Following her disappearance, Thames Valley Police launched an investigation and appealed to the public for information that could help trace her whereabouts.

Human rights organisation HAKI Africa, members of the Kenyan diaspora, and the Kenya High Commission in the UK also joined efforts to amplify the search and support the family.

During the search, Edna was described as about 5ft 5 in tall, of small build, with braided hair, and was last seen wearing a khaki coat with a fur-lined hood, knee-high boots, and glasses.

Her family had issued an emotional appeal saying:

“We are deeply concerned for her safety and are asking anyone who may have seen or heard from her to please come forward.”

For weeks, the family and supporters continued to share missing person alerts across social media and community networks while holding onto hope that she would be found alive.

Community in Mourning

News that her body has now been discovered has devastated her family, friends, and many Kenyans both at home and abroad who had followed the case closely.

Her death has renewed concerns within the Kenyan diaspora about the safety and welfare of Kenyans living abroad.

As investigations continue, her loved ones are now left mourning a young woman whose journey abroad had been driven by academic ambition and the hope of building a brighter future.
