The National Police Service (NPS) has issued an update on the ongoing search and rescue operations following heavy rains and widespread flooding across the country.
According to a statement dated Tuesday, March 10, the NPS reports that 49 people have lost their lives nationwide since the devastating rains that began on Friday, March 6.
The floods have also displaced 2,624 families, causing extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and public facilities, including 16 police stations.
The National Police Service stated that its officers, in collaboration with other multi-agency response teams, remain actively deployed on the ground, with joint operations focused on conducting search and rescue missions, evacuating residents in vulnerable areas, and maintaining security.
“Our officers, working alongside multi-agency response teams, remain actively deployed on the ground,” said the police.
Additionally, NPS extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and urged the public to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue.

Further, the Authorities advised citizens to follow updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and report emergencies or criminal activity through toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112, or via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.
The NPS stressed that it remains committed to protecting communities and mitigating the impact of the floods.
“Nevertheless, we are working to mitigate these challenges and ensure the continuous delivery of policing services to the public,” said NPS.
The response by the police comes as the country has witnessed heavy rains causing floods, particularly in Nairobi, on Friday, March 6, 2026.
Several areas were affected by flooding, including Pipeline and Embakasi along Kware Road, Mukuru (Kwa Njenga, Reuben and Viwandani), Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, South B, South C, Nairobi West, Lang’ata, Umoja 3, Chokaa, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, Loresho and parts of Westlands.
Major roads affected included sections of the CBD, Uhuru Highway, Mbagathi Way, Mombasa Road between South C and the JKIA exit to Kyumbi, Thika Superhighway between Githurai and Kahawa Sukari, Jogoo Road, Lunga Lunga Road, Enterprise Road and Lang’ata Road near T-Mall.

The Kenya Red Cross issued safety guidelines to help residents protect themselves during floods.
The humanitarian organisation advised Kenyans to evacuate immediately to higher ground in the event of flooding and to switch off electricity at the main switch if their homes become flooded.
Residents have been urged to avoid driving, parking, or conducting activities along streams and rivers during floods. They should also stay away from downed power lines and muddy waters where power cables may have fallen.
In flooded areas, people are advised to use a stick to test the depth of water and never drive over a flooded bridge.
