Kenya Launches AI Sensors to Track Air, Noise and Water Pollution in Real Time

Share

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, through the National Environment Management Authority, will now be able to monitor air, noise and water pollution in real time following the launch of artificial intelligence-enabled sensors.

According to Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barraza, the monitoring system will help authorities better track emissions from factories, power plants and other industrial activities, which remain key contributors to rising cases of respiratory illnesses, particularly in urban areas.

The sensors will be installed at high-risk industrial facilities and will transmit real-time data to the regulators, enabling quicker interventions and improved enforcement.

How the Sensors Work

Dr. Barraza, who presided over the launch of the system, also dismissed claims that a section of Karura Forest will be cleared to pave the way for seedling propagation.

“We are going to have the main control room at NEMA headquarters, where we shall set up the screens and the gadgets to receive data from the field directory in real time and we’ll have people monitoring and analyzing that data and advising the authority on issues of emissions, sports for air quality, water quality and noise,” says Robert Orina, who is the deputy director of compliance at NEMA.

“And then we also intend that our regions, especially the five cities, Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa and Nairobi, will also have similar control rooms. “

“We are rehabilitating and renovating this Karura nursery that has been there for more than 30 years, started by the Tree Biotechnology Programme Trust. Again, the NYS and volunteers, where will they be?”

“They will be accommodated in containers that are within an already existing forest ranger’s camp. We are not cutting down trees; we are using already existing camps to set up the containers.” Said Deborah Baraza.
