Share

Iraq has suspended all operations at its strategic oil terminals following attacks on two foreign oil tankers in the port of al-Faw.

The assaults involved explosive-laden boats targeting vessels that had recently loaded crude oil at Umm Qasr port in Basra Province.

Farhan al-Fartousi, head of Iraq’s General Company for Ports, confirmed the suspension to the Iraqi News Agency, stating:

“All oil terminal operations have been completely suspended. Commercial ports are operating normally.”

The temporary closure affects Iraq’s critical oil export infrastructure, raising concerns about potential delays in global crude shipments from the region.

Tragic news emerged as authorities reported that one crew member died during the attacks, while 31 others were rescued alive.

Search operations for missing crew members are ongoing.

“Two oil tankers carrying Iraqi oil were bombed and caught fire near the port of Faw,” an official with the Iraqi Maritime Authority told Rudaw.

“The search continues for the missing,” added Farhan al-Fartousi, without specifying nationalities or identifying who was behind the attacks.

Iraq’s government media cell further confirmed that the two tankers were subjected to sabotage, highlighting the ongoing security risks in the region.

Details of the Tanker Attacks

According to initial reports, two foreign-flagged crude oil tankers were attacked using explosive-laden boats shortly after loading operations at Umm Qasr.

No immediate information has been released regarding casualties or the extent of the damage to the vessels.

Officials are reportedly investigating the attacks and assessing the potential impact on Iraq’s oil exports, which play a crucial role in the nation’s economy.

“We are coordinating with port security and maritime forces to ensure the safety of vessels and personnel,” al-Fartousi added.

Repeated attacks on Iraq’s shipping lanes could influence international oil prices and disrupt supply chains.

The situation remains fluid, with updates expected as investigations continue.
