KeNHA Moves to Clear Illegal Structures and Traders from Mombasa Road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 21-day notice to traders and occupants operating illegally along the Mombasa Road at the Mtito Andei section to vacate the road reserve and remove all unauthorised structures.

In a notice dated March 17, 2026, the highways authority directed all illegal roadside occupants, including traders and individuals with unauthorised structures along the Mtito Andei section of the A8 Road in both directions, to clear the area within twenty-one days from the date of the notice.

The notice was issued by Luka Kimeli, Director General of the highways authority.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby notifies all illegal roadside occupants, including traders and unauthorised structures, along the Mtito Andei section of the A8 Road (Mombasa Road) in both directions, to remove their wares and vacate the road reserve within twenty-one (21) days from the date of this notice,” read part of the notice.

According to KeNHA, the directive is aimed at paving the way for planned service road improvements and drainage rehabilitation works along the busy highway.

The authority noted that the project forms part of ongoing road safety improvement initiatives designed to reduce road traffic accidents and ensure the safe and unobstructed flow of traffic along the major transport corridor linking Nairobi and the coast.

“All affected traders and occupants are required to remove their goods, structures and any other encroachments from the road reserve within twenty-one (21) days from the date of this notice to allow for the implementation of the project works,” the notice stated.

Traders Will Not Be Consulted Once the 21-Day Notice Expires

KeNHA warned that any structures, goods or encroachments that remain within the road reserve after the expiry of the notice period on April 8, 2026, will be removed without further reference to the owners, in accordance with laws governing the protection and management of road reserves.

“All affected traders and occupants are therefore required, through this notice, to remove their goods, structures, and any other encroachments from the road reserve within twenty-one (21) days from the date of this notice to allow for the implementation of the project works,” said KeNHA.
