Traffic Resumes as KeNHA Reopens Two Flood-Affected Roads

Share

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the reopening of the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) Road and the Kaplong–Kisii Road to traffic after days of disruption caused by severe flooding.

In public notices issued on March 12, 2026, the highway authority confirmed that these critical sections are now accessible to motorists following restoration works and structural integrity assessments.

The initial closures on March 7, 2026, had heavily impacted the corridor linking Mai Mahiu, Suswa and Narok due to silt deposits near Kedong Ranch.

Similarly, the Kaplong–Kisii route faced a total cut-off after the Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni, located between Sotik and Chebilat, was submerged.

The reopening of the Kaplong–Kisii section follows a period of monitoring the Kipsonoi River Bridge, where technical teams have been assessing damage caused by the Kipsonoi River. While the bridge is now safe for crossing, KeNHA noted that teams are remaining on-site for minor repairs necessitated by the recent water surge.

These developments come as a relief to transporters and travellers moving between the Rift Valley and Nyanza regions, who had been forced to seek alternative routes over the past week.

Roads Reopened After Emergency Works

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is pleased to inform the public that the Mai Mahiu – Suswa – Narok (B7) Road is now open to traffic.” The Authority stated.

“This follows the closure of the road section Kaplong – Kisii on 7th March, 2026 due to flooding of the Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni, located between Sotik and Chebilat.” The notice added regarding the second major reopening.

Motorists Urged to Exercise Caution

“The Authority, however, appeals to motorists to approach the bridge section with caution as there could be possible flooding due to storm water upstream of Kipsonoi River.” KeNHA cautioned.

“Motorists using the B7 route are also advised to exercise caution when driving through the sections of this road as the rains continue, particularly between Naivasha ICD (Km14) and Suswa Ranch (Km39).” KeNHA added.

Commitment to Connectivity

KeNHA emphasized that safety remains a priority and urged drivers to follow guidance issued by traffic officers and road marshals stationed along these routes.

“We  remain committed to ensuring seamless connectivity to facilitate safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity.” The agency added.

The reopening comes as several parts of the country continue to experience heavy rains that have triggered flooding and affected transport infrastructure.
