The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has reopened the Marigat Loruk (B17) Road, ending a seven-month closure that disrupted travel and trade across Baringo County and the wider North Rift region.
In a statement on Saturday, March 14, KeNHA Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli said the road had been closed in August 2025 following severe flooding and infrastructure repairs.
The reopening is a major relief for motorists, traders, and businesses that rely on this important corridor.
To restore the corridor, KeNHA built a high-capacity box culvert to address recurring drainage problems. The structure is designed to handle heavy rains, reducing the risk of future flooding and ensuring safer, more reliable travel for all road users.
The reopening is expected to reduce travel time, improve safety, and support trade. Motorists, public service vehicles, and freight trucks can now move freely between Marigat and Loruk without relying on previous detours.
“We remain committed to ensure seamless connectivity to facilitate safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity,” Kimeli said.
The restored route will ease movement for businesses transporting goods, including agricultural produce, and for commuters traveling for work or school.
Residents and traders in surrounding areas can now access markets more efficiently, while transport operators are expected to save on fuel and time previously lost to diversion routes.

In addition to the Marigat Loruk Road, KeNHA confirmed that the Mai Mahiu – Suswa – Narok (B7) Road, a key route linking Western Kenya and the South Rift, has been reopened after clearing siltation and flood debris.
Traffic has also resumed on the Kaplong – Kisii Road, which was temporarily closed when the Mugeni Bridge was submerged. Engineers have confirmed the bridge is now safe for public use.
However, a partial closure remains at Thika Superhighway’s Globe Roundabout as bridge reinstatement works continue. Motorists are advised to use the Globe Overpass until March 19, 2026.
KeNHA continues to monitor conditions nationwide and urges all road users to exercise caution as technical teams ensure safety and connectivity.
