The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that by-elections will be held on May 14, 2026, to fill three vacant elective seats across the country, including the parliamentary seat for Emurua Dikirr Constituency.

The seat fell vacant following the death of area MP Johanna Ngeno earlier this month.

In a gazette notice dated March 13, the electoral body confirmed that the by-elections will also be conducted in two county assembly wards: Porro Ward and Endo Ward.

According to the commission, the vacancies occurred at different times earlier this year.

The Porro Ward seat became vacant on January 5, while the Endo Ward seat was declared vacant on January 27, 2026.

The parliamentary seat in Emurua Dikirr was declared vacant on March 10, 2026, following the passing of MP Johanna Ngeno.

Deadline for Political Parties

IEBC has directed political parties planning to participate in the by-elections to submit the names of their candidates by Wednesday, March 25.

The commission also outlined requirements for independent candidates seeking to contest in the mini polls.

Rules for Independent Candidates

According to the electoral body, individuals seeking to run as independent candidates must not have been members of any political party for at least three months immediately before the date of the by-elections.

“The Commission shall publish in the Gazette, the names and symbols of persons intending to contest in the by-elections as independent candidates within seven days of receipt of the names of the candidates,” the notice stated.

Public Officers Required to Resign

IEBC further noted that any public officer intending to contest in the by-elections must resign from their position within seven days after the declaration of the vacancy.

The upcoming by-elections are expected to attract significant political interest, particularly in Emurua Dikirr Constituency, where parties are likely to field strong candidates to succeed the late MP.
