The National Police Service (NPS) has escalated search and rescue operations across the country following the outbreak of flash floods caused by heavy rainfall in various parts of the country.
This is according to a press release issued Tuesday, 17 March by the National Police Service Headquarters, confirming that search and rescue operations are ongoing in the affected areas.
According to the release, “the National Police Service (NPS), in collaboration with all relevant partners, has continued to undertake arduous search and rescue operations across the country,” as they work tirelessly to help those affected by the floods.
The floods have been characterized as sudden and forceful and have caused destruction and loss of life in the affected areas.
The situation in the affected areas continues to worsen as the number of fatalities increases.
According to the latest reports, “the cumulative number of fatalities has now risen to 71, with five more deaths recorded.”
Nairobi has been identified as the worst-hit region, contributing to more than half of the recorded deaths so far.
“Nairobi remains the hardest hit region, with 36 victims,” it was noted, which emphasizes the extent of destruction in this region.
However, other regions have also recorded deaths, which indicates a broader impact of this catastrophe.
The death toll has risen in the Eastern region, as it has been noted that “the Eastern region has recorded one additional fatality, bringing its tally to 19.”
Likewise, “the Coast region has reported one more, increasing its total to three,” while “the Nyanza region has four fatalities, the Rift Valley has eight, and the Central region has reported one.”

The NPS has called on residents to closely monitor updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant agencies.
