William Kassait Kamket is a highly experienced Kenyan politician and former journalist, and is currently a member of parliament representing the Tiaty Constituency in Baringo County.

Kassait was born in 1973 and has established himself as a brave and vocal politician on various matters concerning pastoralist communities in the Rift Valley Region.

Kamket worked as a media professional and communications expert before entering into the political arena.

His prior experience in journalism provided him with expertise in reporting, editing, and producing parliamentary documents, thereby establishing a solid foundation for his career in political communications and public engagement.

He began to gain influence as a political leader in 2013, when he served in local government offices.

Kamket’s academic journey laid the foundation for his future career in communication and leadership.

William undertook a course in a Diploma in Mass Communication at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication between 1993 and 1996.

Kamket obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication at Makerere University (1999-2002).

His educational experience equipped him with skills in media, communication, and discourse, all of which enhanced his success as a journalist and politician.

Kamket & his careers in Journalism and Political Office

Before transitioning to public office, he gained experience in media and parliamentary journalism.

Kamket began as a reporter with Nation Newspapers in the late 1990s. He then worked as a Hansard reporter at the Kenya National Assembly, where he recorded parliamentary proceedings.

He worked as a correspondent for The East African publication before becoming an editor at the East African Legislative Assembly.

This experience helped him acquire important knowledge of governance and the operations of the Kenyan government and other governments in East Africa.

Political Career and Leadership Positions

Kamket entered politics as Baringo County Assembly Speaker; he held this position from 2013 to 2017.

His leadership in the county prepared him well for national politics, as evidenced by the 2017 general election, in which he won the Tiaty parliamentary seat.

In the 2022 election, Kamket retained the Tiaty parliamentary seat for KANU, which had initially been affiliated with the Azimio coalition.

However, following the formation of the government, Kamket changed allegiance, supporting the Kenya Kwanza administration, aligning himself with the ruling party.

In Parliament, Kamket has been a member of various committees, including the Committee on Delegated Legislation and the Committee on Regional Integration, placing him at the center of scrutiny in these fields.

Political Views & Public Impact

Kamket is known for his views on security matters affecting pastoralists affected by banditry.

In addition, he has consistently advocated for his constituents and the greater Pokot to be given fair treatment when addressing inter-community disputes (in terms of how they are handled).

His outspoken nature has made him a well-known yet sometimes controversial figure in the national discourse.

He remains an important political force in Rift Valley politics and a leading advocate for disadvantaged communities.

William Kamket is married to Immaculate Kassait, the Data Commissioner for Kenya, who is also a senior government official.

Although both hold public office, they live quite privately, with little information available about their children.

Kamket receives a decent salary and allowances each month for serving as an elected member of parliament in Kenya.

In the national assembly, members are compensated monthly with a payment consisting of basic salary, housing allowance, and non-cash account benefits associated with duties related to their office.
