Tiaty Member of Parliament (MP) William Kamket is mourning the death of his 13-year-old son, Bill Ballot, who passed away on Tuesday, March 17.

Reports say the legislator’s family is grieving the loss, although the cause of the boy’s death has not yet been disclosed.

The news was confirmed by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party digital strategist Antonellah Kakuko, who also extended her condolences to Kamket’s wife, Kenya’s first Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait.

In a heartfelt message, Kakuko said: “We leave it all to You, Dear Lord. Go well, Bill Junior Ballot. Your light will forever remain in our hearts.”

“May the Almighty Father grant my brother-in-law, Hon. William Kamket (MP, Tiaty), and his wife, Immaculate Kassait (Data Commissioner), the strength, comfort, and peace to endure this painful loss. May they find grace to mourn their beloved son and courage to carry on in his memory.”

Kamket’s Political Career

William Kamket has had a long and dynamic career in Kenya’s political landscape.

He first rose to prominence in 2013 when he was elected Speaker of the Baringo County Assembly, a position he held until 2017.

In the 2017 General Election, he successfully vied for the Tiaty parliamentary seat, marking his first term as Member of Parliament.

He was re-elected in the 2022 General Election on a KANU ticket under the Azimio la Umoja coalition led by Raila Odinga.

However, shortly after William Ruto was declared President, Kamket shifted allegiance from Azimio to the Kenya Kwanza administration, where he has since been a vocal supporter of government policies.

In recent months, he has emerged as one of the fiercest defenders of President Ruto’s leadership.

On January 5 last year, while speaking during an interdenominational service attended by the President in Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kamket stirred controversy after warning critics of the Head of State.

He suggested that continued attacks on the President could prompt his allies to push for an extended stay in power, referencing how former President Daniel arap Moi ruled for 24 years.

Legislative Roles and Experience

In the National Assembly, Kamket serves as the Vice Chair of the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee, playing a key role in monitoring the execution of constitutional provisions.

His earlier legislative experience includes serving in the National Assembly between 2004 and 2007 before returning in 2017, where he has served to date under the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party.

Career Before Politics

Before venturing into elective politics, Kamket built a strong background in journalism and parliamentary reporting.

He worked as an Editor at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and served as a Hansard Reporter at the Kenya National Assembly from 2004 to 2007.

Earlier, he had also worked as a Correspondent for The East African between 2000 and 2002.

His career began in media, where he served as a Reporter for Nation Newspapers from 1996 to 1997, and later as a Hansard Reporter at the Kenya National Assembly from 1997 to 1998.

Education Background

Kamket holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Makerere University, which he pursued between 1999 and 2002 in Kampala, Uganda.

He also earned a Diploma in Mass Communication from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication between 1993 and 1996.
