Share

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has unveiled a new formula to guide the placement of students into degree programmes across universities in Kenya.

The agency announced the changes following a stakeholders’ validation forum held at Kirinyaga University, where key players in the higher education sector reviewed and approved the updated placement criteria.

The forum brought together vice-chancellors, principals of constituent colleges, and representatives from public and private universities, alongside regulatory and professional bodies.

High-Level Education Officials Attend Forum

The event was presided over by Dr. Carol Hunja, Secretary for Higher Education, who represented the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala.

Also in attendance were KUCCPS Board Chair Cyrus Gituai, KUCCPS CEO Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome, and Teachers Service Commission Chair Dr. Jamleck Muturi.

The Placement Criteria Review Committee, chaired by Prof. Mike Kuria, who also serves as CEO of the Commission for University Education, led the review process.

New Placement Formula to Take Effect in 2026/2027

According to KUCCPS, the revised formula is aimed at improving fairness, transparency, and alignment with evolving academic and professional requirements.

“The Placement Service yesterday convened a stakeholders validation forum… to validate the reviewed placement criteria for degree programmes,” KUCCPS said in a statement.

The review process began last year, involving extensive consultations with stakeholders across the education sector.

Following validation and approval by the KUCCPS Board, the new placement criteria will be implemented during the 2026/2027 placement cycle.

Focus on Fairness and Quality
