Proposal Introduced to Tackle “Wash Wash” and Online Scams

Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda, SC has formally asked for answers from the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations over the increasing rate of mobile money fraud, digital impersonation fraud and other tech‑enabled financial crimes targeting Kenyans all over the country.

Speaking in the senate, Senator Ojienda warned that the fast embracing of mobile money and electronic banking by many people, makes many users very vulnerable to con men.

The Senator also noted that mobile money platforms scams, SIM‑swap fraud and online scams are inflicting serious losses on consumers.

Ojienda says Mobile banking has increased fraud

He stated that mobile banking has increased fraud which makes the public lose confidence in digital financial services and also threatens financial security for ordinary citizens.

In his request, the Senator asked the Committee chaired by Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo to provide comprehensive data on cases that were reported on mobile money fraud, SIM swap attacks and related digital scams from 2023 to date, including the total financial losses that were incurred.

Kisumu Senator Calls for accountability and measures to curb fraud

He also called for accountability from the National Computer Coordination Committee, urging it to outline strict measures to investigate and prosecute individuals and organised criminal networks behind these cyber‑enabled crimes which target Kenyans who have digital devices.

Senator Ojienda emphasized that Kenyans need effective coordination between law enforcement agencies, telecommunications providers and financial institutions in detecting, preventing and responding to fraud.

Furthermore, he urged the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration to strengthen consumer protection regulations and increase public awareness campaigns.

He explained that these moveswill help citizens identify, prevent and also report digital financial fraud easily to the required authorities.
