New Twist as DCI Reveals Source of Bodies in Kericho Mass Grave

Share

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken full control of the probe into a suspected mass grave discovered at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho East Sub-County, Kericho County.

According to a statement from the DCI on March 22, the Homicide Directorate will oversee exhumation efforts, scheduled to begin March 23, 2026, to allow pathologists and forensic experts to recover the remains, establish the cause of death, and attempt identification.

Investigators are also probing whether any criminal activity occurred beyond reported irregularities in the burial process.

Preliminary reports indicate that 13 unclaimed bodies were officially released from Nyamira County Referral Hospital and transported to Kericho for burial on the morning of March 20.

Detectives have already traveled to Nyamira to interview hospital staff, drivers, escorts, and the cemetery caretaker, with five witnesses having recorded detailed statements so far.

During a search of the cemetery caretaker’s residence, authorities recovered a photocopied court order purportedly authorizing the burial of seven unclaimed bodies. The original documentation is slated for verification.

The vehicle alleged to have transported the bodies, a white Land Cruiser, has been impounded for forensic examination.

Makaburini Cemetery, owned by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), remains cordoned off under 24-hour police guard.

DCI Swing to Action

“The DCI is committed to a meticulous, impartial, and transparent investigation,” the statement said, noting that all aspects of the case—including discrepancies in burial numbers, document authenticity, the condition of the remains, and any signs of foul play- will be thoroughly examined.
