Panic as Heavy Rains Put Nairobi Dam at Risk, Govt Orders Immediate Evacuations

The government has issued an immediate evacuation order for residents residing in several Nairobi neighbourhoods after authorities gave a warning that the Nairobi Dam is at risk of collapsing due to recent days of persistent heavy rainfall.

In a notice issued on Friday, 20th March, the Water Resources Authority (WRA) said that rising water levels in the dam’s reservoir, which is fueled by ongoing intense downpours.

Have pushed the structure close to failing, which poses a serious threat to communities living downstream.

Authorities have directed residents in at least six informal settlements and estates to move immediately to higher ground to protect their lives.

Areas Affected by Evacuation Order

The WRA notice specifically mentions residents living downstream of the Nairobi Dam. Areas under immediate evacuation include: Kibera, Nyayo Highrise, Dam Estate, Lang’ata, Nairobi West, and Madaraka. Other high-risk locations such as Mukuru slums, South B, Pipeline, Embakasi, and Industrial Area are also on high alert.

Government officials have been monitoring the situation closely as water levels have been rising. The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of more moderate to heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms across the Nairobi metropolitan area, raising the risk of flooding.

“Residents must prioritize their safety and move to designated higher ground immediately,” said a county official.

Government urges quick action and compliance

Emergency services and county authorities are coordinating rescue and relief efforts, including temporary shelters and transport for vulnerable families. The government spokesperson Issac Mwaura, said.

Authorities have emphasized that staying in high-risk areas could pose serious risks.
