Robbery Plot Fails as Victim Outsmarts Suspects in Machakos

A daring daylight robbery attempt in Machakos County was dramatically foiled after swift action by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, with two suspects now in custody.

The incident occurred at around 3:00 pm on Sunday March 22,2026 in Kimutwa village, when an unsuspecting resident went about his routine at his home.

His quiet afternoon was interrupted when a Toyota Fielder (registration number KDS 457A) stopped outside his compound.

Inside were two men who casually beckoned him over, claiming to be selling various items.

With no immediate suspicion, the victim approached the vehicle. One of the suspects began scrolling through images on his phone, allegedly showcasing goods for sale.

Robbery Attempt Takes a Dangerous Turn

Moments later, the driver requested the victim’s phone under the pretext of saving his contact details. Sensing danger, the victim declined.

“In a sudden and calculated move, the driver forcefully grabbed the phone,” a police report indicated.

What followed was a life-threatening struggle. The victim bravely lunged halfway into the vehicle in an attempt to recover his phone.

The suspects, however, sped off, dragging him along.

Victim’s Brave Act Stops Escape

In a dramatic twist, the victim managed to grab the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and veer off the road before stopping abruptly.

“The suspects, realizing their plan had failed, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot,” authorities stated.

Swift Police Response and Arrest

The victim quickly raised alarm, attracting members of the public who alerted police officers from Konza Police Station.

Officers who were on patrol nearby responded immediately and launched a pursuit.

Their efforts paid off as the two suspects were arrested shortly after.

“They are currently in custody awaiting processing and subsequent arraignment in court,” police confirmed.

Key Evidence Recovered

A follow-up operation at the scene led to the recovery of the getaway vehicle, which was towed to Konza Police Station.

In a significant development, officers discovered a second registration plate (KDV 495X) hidden inside the car’s bonnet raising suspicion that the suspects could be linked to other criminal activities.

The incident highlights the critical role of public awareness and cooperation in fighting crime.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
