Williamson Tea Appoints Successor As Veteran CEO Steps Down

Williamson Tea  Kenya and Kapchorua Tea Kenya PLC have announced a leadership transition at the top of their management, marking the retirement of long-serving Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Alan Laurence Carmichael and the appointment of Angus Nyariki Omete as his successor.

In a public notice which is dated March 23, 2026, the board of the company confirmed that Mr. Carmichael will be retiring from his role as Managing Director and CEO on March 31, 2026, bringing to a close a distinguished career spanning more than five decades in the tea industry.

He has served as Managing Director and CEO since February 2008.

During his tenure, the board credited him with strengthening the Group’s market position, improving operational efficiency and enhancing tea quality, while also supporting increased production volumes across the business.

Carmichael to Remain as Non-executive Director

The board further says that even after stepping down from the executive role, Mr. Carmichael will remain within the Group as a Non-Executive Director, where he is expected to continue offering strategic guidance and institutional experience.

At the same time, the board has announced the appointment of Mr. Omete as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2026. The appointment signals a transition to internal leadership continuation within the Group.

The board says Mr. Omete is currently serving as Group Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director and brings more than 26 years of experience in the tea sector. Since joining the company in November 1999 as a graduate trainee, he has held several senior roles supporting financial management, governance, strategy and operations across the Group.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree from Kenyatta University and is a member of both ICPAK and ICS.

The board expressed its confidence that he will steer the Group into its next phase of sustainable, value-driven growth.
