The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has ordered all media houses to introduce a mandatory seven-second delay on live broadcasts. Broadcasters will be fully responsible for any content aired on their platforms.
According to the advisory released on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the council aims to curb the rising spread of misinformation and inflammatory remarks during live transmissions. The seven-second delay will allow editors to filter harmful or unethical content before it reaches the public.
Unchecked live coverage, especially at political rallies and public gatherings, often carries statements that may breach the Code of Conduct for Media Practice in Kenya.
The council emphasized that the directive applies to both traditional and digital platforms. All media houses must comply with Clause 11 of the Code, which requires a delay mechanism in live programming.
MCK expressed concern that some live broadcasts could inflame tensions or escalate conflict. Editors are urged to carefully review sensitive material and remove offensive language when necessary, particularly in matters of public interest.
“Mandatory delay for live broadcasts – A media enterprise shall incorporate a minimum seven-second delay in live broadcasts to prevent the unintended publication of material that violates this Code.” The advisory stated.

The council stressed that freedom of expression is vital but must go hand in hand with responsibility. Ethical journalism strengthens public trust and supports democratic values.
Broadcasters are encouraged to adopt preventive measures to ensure coverage does not endanger public safety or inflame divisions.
Careful monitoring of live transmissions will also help media houses maintain professionalism and avoid legal consequences. MCK reminded broadcasters that liability rests with them, even when harmful statements come from third parties during live coverage.

MCK concluded by urging media houses to remain vigilant. Strict adherence to the directive will protect audiences and maintain high standards in Kenya’s evolving media landscape.
