Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) refers to a form of education that focuses on equipping learners with practical skills, knowledge, and competencies required for specific jobs and industries.
TVET institutions target a diverse group of learners, with the aim of enhancing employability through hands-on training.
A key focus is on youth not in education, employment, or training (NEET), helping them acquire skills and transition into the workforce.
They also cater to secondary school leavers, particularly those who do not pursue university education, by offering alternative career pathways.
In addition, TVET institutions support industry practitioners and artisans in the informal sector through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), enabling them to gain formal certification for their existing skills.

Currently, TVET institutions are spread across all counties in the country and are regulated by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), which ensures that institutions and programmes meet national standards.
TVETA is responsible for accrediting institutions, approving training programmes, and overseeing the award of recognised certificates and qualifications.
As of 2026, the list of accredited TVET institutions includes 34 National Polytechnics, 1,807 Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs), and 1,216 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs).
However, TVETA has deregistered 17 institutions for failing to meet the required standards. These include both Vocational Training Centres (VTCs), which offer basic, entry-level skills training, and Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs), which provide more advanced and structured programmes.
